standing catYou must train a cat for basic commands like sitting, standing, and staying. The last command can be a little tough to teach, as cats are curious animals by nature. They don’t like to stay at one place for long. So, you must have lots of patience for teaching them this command.

Train A Cat To Stand

This is easy to teach. First, let your cat sit. Utter your pet’s name, along with the word “stand.” Scratch your cat’s rump while speaking. Cats love being scratched at this place above their tail. They will at once raise their rump when you scratch there. As soon as she does this, click and pat your cat. Reward her. Repeat this process until your cat starts recognizing your command and responds to it.

Train A Cat To Stay

Although a tough one to teach, this command proves to be quite useful in times of your pet’s safety. First, make your cat sit. Then, hold your hand in front of her with your palm facing her and say, “Stay.” If your cat stays for a few seconds, reward her. Repeat the process. Increase the time of stay, gradually. Reward only when she does it right.

To train a cat, you need to spare lots of time and stock up lots of patience. Remember, once they are trained, they become your best companions!

Train A Cat To Twirl At Your Command

After teaching your cat the basic commands, it’s time to train a cat to do some fun commands such as twirling. This is a command that brings joy to the cat as well as the owner.

Teaching Her To Twirl

First of all, call your cat and let her stand. Take a treat or training wand and hold it at a distance from your cat’s nose. It shouldn’t be too near to let her grab it and not too far to escape her notice. Now, move the treat in a circle, uttering the word “spin.” Remember to keep the treat near your cat’s nose all the while. Your cat will follow the treat and spin in a circle. Once she does this, pat her and let her have the treat.

Repeat the process until your cat spins efficiently at every twirl command. Now, increase the distance between the treat and your cat’s nose. Do this walking away a few inches, every time. The catch is to train a cat to spin without a treat. She will take some time to learn this. So don’t lose your patience.

Once she has mastered the art of spinning, try teaching her to spin in the opposite direction! You can teach your pussy many such play commands. It’s a lot of fun, both for you and your cat!

Train A Cat To Come On Your Command

You must train a cat to obey your commands. The “come” command is one of the most important ones. If you have a habit of letting your cat outside on her own, it becomes all the more important to teach her the “come” command in order to get her inside the house. Many owners have spent countless hours chasing their cat. So, if you don’t want to be seen running after your pet, start training her now.

A cat without the basic learning about commands is difficult to handle. You can’t make her do things you want her to do. Therefore, every cat owner must train a cat to make her an obedient pet.

Tips To Train A Cat To Come

You must have a treat handy while training a cat. Besides, a training wand is helpful to draw your pussy’s attention. When you utter the word “come” and your cat comes to you, you must pat her on the back and let her touch the training wand. Once she does this, click and reward her with a treat. Again, show her the wand. Trail it around to make her follow it. Then, draw the wand towards you and speak the word “come” along with your pet’s name. If she does it right, reward her. If not, try again.

Repeat the same process in the next room so that your cat understands that this command has to be followed at every place.

Once you train a cat, you’ll get a companion who listens and obeys you. How nice this feels!

There are cat owners who prefer toilet training cat. If you reside in an apartment, this can be a nice idea. Also, if you find handling litter boxes a repulsive task; you can opt for teaching your pussy to share the toilet with you.

Things To Think About

Before you start toilet training cat, you must be sure of wanting to share toilet with an animal. If there are two toilets at home, you need not think much. You can promptly let your cat use the spare one. However, if there’s only one toilet in the house, you may want to think twice.

Remember, you can’t expect your cat to maintain cleanliness in the toilet always. She may miss her aim at times, creating a mess over the seat. Cats also don’t flush! (Are you thinking of teaching her that too?)

What about your guests? Will they be okay with the idea of sharing toilet with a cat? You may not want them to see your toilet in a mess. And what if some of them are allergic to cats?

Well, these are some of the things you have to consider before toilet training your cat. If you think your guests or family members won’t mind, you can go ahead with the idea. Once the cat learns to use the toilet, you’re saved from the nasty task of emptying litter boxes. In fact, your cat will become more of a family member than a pet. After all, she uses the toilet!

My Cat Hops On Counters & Tables

>Many cat owners allow this cat behavior. They think it’s okay to let their pussy practice her jumping skills on tables and counters. But, this behavior can create a mess when you place your meals on the table. Also, it can become a menace when you’re sitting with guests and your cat suddenly shows her presence by jumping on the table!

Teaching Appropriate Cat Behavior

First of all, you must stop placing left over food on the counter. Your cat will get easy access to food when she’s hungry and will forget her bowl. Keep the counter squeaky clean. Paste sticky tape on the counter. Your cat would hate to get her paws all sticky. One or two times and she’ll stop jumping over the counter.

One nice way to prevent your cat from jumping onto tables is squirting water over her. She’ll get so startled that she won’t try again.

In order to discourage any bad cat behavior, you must create unfavorable situations for your pussy to carry out the behavior. Once she learns that it’s not enjoyable to do this anymore, she’ll stop.

Don’t let your cat carry on with her unacceptable cat behavior. You’ll find it difficult to handle her later. Try to instill good habits in your pet right from the beginning.

Cat Training – Teach Your Cat To Kiss!

This cat training is for those owners who share a close bond with their pets. A cat’s idea of kissing is rubbing against you. She shows her love by transferring her scent to you. If your cat loves you, she’ll learn this trick quickly.

The Kissing Kitty!

Your cat should be hungry during this cat training session. Start the session by making your cat sit. Call a friend and tell her to sit a few feet away from the pussy. Apply some meat flavored cat food on your friend’s cheek. Bring your cat near your friend and let her sniff at the yummy treat. Don’t let her lick the treat; not now. Put the cat back to her original place.

Now, let the cat go. While doing this, utter the cat’s name and the word “kiss.” She’ll remember the food and head straight to your friend’s cheek and start licking! At this time, sound the clicker and give her another treat. Repeat this process a number of times. Gradually, reduce the amount of food you apply on your friend’s cheek. Eventually, she’ll start responding to the command and kiss without the treat!

Make her kiss your family members, close friends, and other people who are familiar with your cat. What a loving cat she’ll become!

You must create a favorable environment for cat training. A quiet room, free from distractions and clutter is the ideal place to give cat lessons. However, the place that you choose to train your cat should be familiar to her. The first pre-requisite of cat training is a comfortable place. Next is to have an appealing training wand handy. Rub a little tuna oil at one end of the wand so that your cat is drawn towards it.

Before you expect your cat to become your hero (or heroine!), you must familiarize her with training tools like wand, clicker, and others. How to do that? Well, every time your pussy touches the wand, click the clicker and reward her with a treat. This makes her understand that there’s something good associated with the wand and clicker. Let your training session be of 5-10 minutes’ duration, not longer that this. Or else your cat will lose interest and may not want to learn it again. The catch is to retain the interest element in your training so that she has fun while learning.

Food Treats For Cat Training

Get your pet’s favorite food as a treat. It’s even better to get her something that she doesn’t get to eat often, yet she likes it. Various food treats include chopped liver pieces, cheese pieces, tuna, meat flavored chunks of food, chicken heart or cooked chicken pieces, and cat biscuits or chocolate. Make cat training, an interesting and enjoyable session for both you as well as your cat. This is no school; so forget about punishments.

Cat Moods – My Kitty Is Angry!

One of the cat moods that are quite obvious is anger. When a cat’s ears are pinned back, her hair and spine are raised, her tail is thumping on the floor, and she hisses, you must stay away from her. She’s furious! If you continue to pester her at this time, she might swat you with her front paws. This is a warning that says, “Stay away from me!” If you still don’t heed her, she might bite you. Although this is rare, yet cats use it as a last resort.

From An Angry Cat To A Happy Cat!

If you love cats, you must understand cat moods too. Yes, cats have moods. Sometimes, they are happy. Sometimes, they feel despondent. They feel all kinds of emotions. As a cat owner, it’s your duty to understand and respect their moods.

Many cat owners are perplexed by certain cat moods. For example, some may find it hard to know whether their cat is calm or under stress. Here’s a way to know it.

Difference Between Calm Cat And Stressed Cat

Look at your cat in the eyes and squint. If she squints back, she’s calm. You’ll notice her fur lying flat. She may even come to you and rub against you. A calm kitty rolls over her back, stretches her legs, and rubs her head on the carpet. When you watch her doing this, you can say she’s in total tranquility. At this time, you might be tempted to rub her cute belly. But, most cats don’t like this.

When your cat is stressed out, she’ll seek a place to hide. You’ll notice her crawling under the sofa or bed. They prefer quiet and dark places at this time. The best thing you can do is leaving her alone. If possible, try to find out the cause of stress and remove it.

Knowing cat moods makes it easier for you to understand your pet. This also helps you bond better with your pet.

10 Cat Training Pointers To Remember

Cat training is not something that you accomplish within a day or two. It might take a couple of weeks or months, depending on the pet breed and your teaching style. However, whatever type of cat you have, there are certain things that you must remember while teaching commands and good manners to your cat.

10 Pointers

  • Have lots of patience. Even humans require time and practice to master skills. This is a cat!
  • Schedule cat training before mealtime. A hungry cat is more inclined to learn, as they know they’ll get a treat. When you finish the last trick for the session, instead of giving them a treat as a reward, feed them their meal.
  • Make sure your cat knows one trick properly before you switch to another.
  • Always say your cat’s name before giving the command. This is really important when there is more than one cat.
  • If your cat doesn’t wish to take lessons, don’t force her. Either try another trick, or postpone the session.
  • Don’t forget to revise the tricks that you’ve taught her to make sure they are fresh in her mind.
  • Conduct your cat training sessions in a variety of places so that she learns to carry out your commands everywhere.
  • Your training sessions should be short.
  • Maintain interest in sessions. When you notice your cat losing interest, stop the session.
  • Always reward your cat when she performs well, especially the tough tricks.
  • So, your cat training school has already started! Enroll your kitty now!
